African Fusion Lunch with a Restaurant Founder

0.00

The most tender and zesty stories get shared over a meal. You’ll be floored by some of the stories our Food Business entrepreneurs have to tell.

Jordan has the fast-growing business in Langa, after past-life as an international sous chef. Only 9 months in, and he has already acquired a restaurant (and recently renovated it), a food truck and a food trailer, and a full staff to support him. The combination of his story, the appeal of his personality and his business acumen makes it clear why. Although it won’t be the case for long, he’s still quite under the radar. That said, on a local level, word of his food and good-vibes space has spread like wildfire inside Langa is the new talk of the town. *

Faith has built a strong family business providing high quality take-away food and catering with exceptional customer service and professionalism. Nande, her daughter, is the namesake of the business. She and her children cook from their home kitchen, but don’t underestimate this establishment: It’s some of the best and freshest food you’ll find in all of Cape Town. Faith is a wonderful and joyous human being with a storied history—chatting with her feels like chatting to a best friend.

Important Context & Background

Starting a restaurant is hard, even if you're from a resourced background inside a resourced community. It takes whole other level of raw talent, dogged determination, thirst for knowledge, and serious people-skills in order to create a viable restaurant or food business in the townships. The culinary entrepreeurs we'll introduce you to are inspirational—and still mostly under the radar. The entrepreneur will join you at your table and speak to you. As poignant as their stories are, we're quite certain that the food will speak even louder.

Township tourism has tended to almost exclusively prepare traditional food for guests—for good reason, of course—so that they taste a differnet cuisine from another part of the world. The younger entrepreneurial generation—albeit still proud of their traditional food and customs—has a more hybridized aspiration and taste, what might be coined African Fusion Cuisine. We at SidebySide, and our guests, strongly feel it's superior food. Some say it's the best food they've had while in Cape Town. Why not try a Western Dish that's cooked with a traditiaonl sauce or accompanied by a traditional side. Food is a form of self-expression—and what the townhsips is trying to tell the world, almost across the board, is that "we are a part of the global family" and not much different (at least fundamentally) than any American or European. Come break bread and unite with an inspiring chef and culinary entrepreneur.
